FAQ

Sewn Goods / Pattern makers, sample makers. Apparel and soft goods design development. Frequently asked questions page.

I would like to have SEWN GOODS quote a project. What do you need from us to start the quote process?
To start a quote ideally we'd like a tech pack of the design you would like to create. This would include fabrication and trim information, technical drawings, flat sketches that illustrate design details and key functional elements as well as measurements and graded spec info if applicable. Please also include information about projected budget. This type of package allows us to clearly see the requirements of your project and determine if we're a proper fit as well as provide you with a price quote.

We realize some brands/designers may not have the software or knowledge to make a tech pack. In place of a tech pack you can substitute sketches, images or links to similar products from reference brands with the desired fabric and trim info, dimensions, design details and key functional elements. This will give us a solid place to start from and will inform and guide further questions about the project and your goals.

From start to finish how long does it take to complete a project?
Because each project is unique there is no stock answer to this question. Some of the factors that determine a timeline for a given project are current workload and calendar bookings, fabric/ trim sources, design complexity, scope of work and client or vendor follow through on receivables, to name a few. The SEWN GOODS calendar is booked on a first come first served basis. Please contact us with your project details and timeline for your project. With this information we will be able to provide an estimate.

I called you guys and left a message. How come I didn't receive a call back?
Don't take it personally. Because we receive a high volume of calls it is not possible for us to return them all. The best way to reach us is by email: info@sewngoods.com.  If you have a project you'd like us to help you with please send us a sketch, pictures or a tech pack. Links to reference samples from other brands can work as well. Include information about the budget. This will help us determine if we'll be a good fit for your project and prepare a quote if necessary.

I have production patterns, sources and samples can you help me with production only?
SEWN GOODS is a pattern service and development house first so our focus is on the pre-production side of the process: pattern making, grading, design development, sourcing and sample making. We offer production as part of a full package depending on the style to be produced. We take on production specific work that doesn't require pre-production on a case by case basis. Please contact us with your project details.

I'm interested in some of the tech pack templates in the Sewn Goods web shop but I would like you guys to edit the included sketches to reflect my design exactly, can you make changes to the sketches according to my needs?
Certainly, Our Excel tech pack templates are intended for the end user who has MS Excel and wants to create their own illustrator sketches as well as provide their own base size garment specs, however we can make changes to the templates at your request and supply garment measures if you require. Our hourly rate of $125hr with a 2hr min would apply to any requested changes.  Please contact us for a quote.

What is a tech pack?
A tech pack or technical package also referred to as a spec sheet, flat, technical flat, or flat sketch is a document that includes all or most of the necessary information to create your design. This often includes but is not limited to garment measurements, fabrication and trim information, seam classes, line drawings that illustrate the design silhouette, details and key functional elements as well as graded specs if applicable. Tech packs can have varying degrees of detail, depending on the end use or what information is known at the time it's created.

Can you guys tell me how to edit your tech pack templates in Excel?
We don't offer tech support for excel tech pack templates at this time. We would prefer you not purchase a template if you're not confident in you or your teams ability to use Excel or customize the template(s) to your needs in Excel.

The images of the tech pack templates are blurred out in the web shop listings, why is this?
We intentionally blur the POMS and art work in the web listings for security purposes. Actual template files will be delivered with in focus POMS and sketches.

Do you guys offer Excel tech pack templates with editable Illustrator artwork files?
Any of our Excel templates can be converted to include editable illustrator files for an additional $250 not including template cost. Please contact us for more information.

How do you create patterns, do you work by hand or do you make them in a cad program?
We have 15+ years of experience drafting patterns by hand as well as creating them in a cad based system. We can work with standard CAD DXF file types as well as apparel cad ASTM DXF files, Adobe illustrator files and native Accumark pattern files.

What are patterns?
Patterns are paper template shapes that contain, in an ideal situation, all the necessary info (notches, grain line, drills, seams, annotations) for reproducing a sewn product. These templates are laid on top of fabric and cut out during sampling or production ,once the two dimensional pieces have been cut in fabric they are then sewn together to make a three dimensional product.

What is a first pattern?
First patterns are the initial set of pattern shapes created for a style. In most cases first patterns will be refined/changed, even if only slightly to be updated with fit, style and functional changes throughout the process of development.

I have paper patterns that I would like to have transferred to tag board paper or manila tag can SEWN GOODS do this ?
Yes, we can transfer your patterns from any substrate: tissue paper, marker paper, craft paper, cloth, etc., to manila tag board. We charge $25 per marked cut piece with a $250 minimum charge (10pcs). Rate applies to patterns that are complete /intact and do not require auditing, corrections or the addition/subtraction of seams.

I have paper patterns that I would like checked and or corrected does SEWN GOODS offer this service?
Yes, we can perform pattern verification/audits, corrections and can add/remove seams from your patterns if you require.  Our standard pattern rate applies ($125hr with a two hour minimum)

I have a piece of clothing that I would like SEWN GOODS to make a pattern from are you guys able to do this?
Certainly, this is what we refer to as patterns from a garment or patterns from a reference. We can take most any apparel style or carry item, bag /soft luggage, etc and create what we call first patterns. we can also incorporate design changes into the first patterns and create first samples if you require. Contact us with design information for a quote.

I have patterns that I would like to have graded to a size range, can you guys do this?

Yes, we can grade patterns to a size range based on specifications or provide the grade rules. We offer grading for different types of apparel styles/categories including:  men's, women's knits, wovens, tops and bottoms,  Patterns not created by Sewn Goods must be verified for accuracy before grading. Pricing information for standard grading can be seen on our Rates page.

What is a first sample?
A first sample or prototype is a sample sewn from first patterns often sewn in muslin, place holder fabric or can also be sewn in the intended final fabrications/trims. In most cases first samples are to be used to asses the design and determine if changes are necessary. Once the first prototype is created it can be used as a basis for developing the design further. The main purpose of the first sample is to create something the client can test the fit and function of and ultimately make change requests on or approve.

Do you offer dye sublimation, silk screening or embroidery services?
Our focus is on pre production/development services for cut and sew apparel and soft bags ( pattern making, grading, design/fit development, sample making and sourcing). Other related services such as silk screening, dye sublimation, heat transfer, embroidery, garment embellishment etc. are services we can provide only if they are part of a cut and sew piece of work.

We're  uncomfortable about sharing design information (tech packs, sketches, specs, etc. with Sewn Goods. Will you guys sign an NDA?
Before engaging in a business relationship we require that clients sign the SEWN GOODS service agreement.  Our agreement includes a clause on non disclosure which we have found sufficient for most situations where client confidentiality is concerned.  For this reason we are disinclined to sign additional NDA agreements drafted by prospective clients, third parties or their attorneys.

I'm in the neighborhood can I stop by SEWN GOODS and talk to you about my project?
SEWN GOODS meets with clients by appointment.  We require a minimum 72hrs notice to book a cut & sew meeting with a new client, our availability is subject to our work load and current projects in calendar . For in person meetings / video consultations we charge $150 for the first hour and $75 for each additional hour.  *Cut & sew consultation fees are due in advance to book the meeting into the calendar and reserve the date/time.  All meetings are paid electronically through Square Payments or Pay Pal. Visit our Cut & Sew Consultation page.

Why does SEWN GOODS require budget information to provide a quote?
Quoting a project takes time. We ask for budget information to determine whether or not we can serve a prospective customer. We receive a large number of RFQ's and for this reason we need to know if a budget is sufficient to warrant spending the time to create a quote.

I have some questions about the process that aren't answered by your FAQ. Can I set up a time to have a phone call with you guys?
Sewn Goods offers a complementary 15 minute phone consultation to prospective customers.
In most cases we can give suitable project advisement via email or by phone once we’ve been sent project details (tech pack, links or images to reference products, design details and project budget.) via email.
